Tony Vitello on the SEC team’s playing style that resembles Evansville

No. 1 national seed Tennessee (53-11) will host Evansville (38-24), Friday-Sunday, in the Knoxville Super Regional at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

Seventh-year Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello met with the media on Wednesday. He discussed whether the Purple Aces reminded him of an SEC team the Vols faced this season.

“A little bit of Kentucky with the well-balanced offense,” Vitello said. “They play with a very nice style. I think that’s something that gets lost in the mix.

“I think the one thing I did in my conversations yesterday was keep reminding people that their playing style is fun. They have a lot of confidence, they go for it and play hard, so in addition to the talent there, they also have a playing style that perhaps makes them better than the roles.

Evansville advanced to super-regional play after winning the Greenville Regional, hosted by East Carolina.

“I’ve known Wes and Coach Carroll for a long time,” Vitello said of the Evansville head coach. “He’s always been really good at running around, getting into the bushes and finding guys who he knows will develop into something even better than they already are.

“That’s kind of the composition of that team. There are a lot of guys who have developed and become even better than they are and all together. It makes for a very good team.”
