Sam Liss: Senator Dick Sears will be missed by many

Dear editor,

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Senator Dick Sears. As gruff as Dick could seem, and as explosive as he could be at times, after getting to know him I realized how compassionate he really was and how much he valued the needs and input of his constituents.

Dick was as effective as any Vermont senator – even more so than most – in advancing his moderate but high-profile agenda from his positions of influence in the legislature. I worked with him as I successfully advocated for reasonable legislation for people with disabilities. He always emphasized the importance of moderation and practical feasibility, both fiscally and otherwise, but he also understood the need and importance of legislation that would improve the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities, and the positive long-term implications of such initiatives .

I’m sure he will be missed by many. I will certainly miss him.

Sam Liss
