What caused the PruittHealth data breach?

The PruittHealth data breach was only recently announced and more information is expected in the near future. However, Pruitt Health’s filing with the Vermont Attorney General provides important information about what led to the breach. PruitHealth also posted a message on its website discussing the incident.

According to these sources, PruittHealth learned in November 2023 that parts of its computer network had been the victim of a cyber attack. In response, PruittHealth secured its computer network and eliminated hacker access. PruittHealth then enlisted the help of outside data security experts to assist in the company’s investigation.

Ultimately, PruittHealth discovered that the hackers were able to access and obtain copies of electronic files stored on one of its servers. The hackers then demanded that PruittHealth pay a ransom; otherwise the hackers would leak the data. On December 7, 2023, the hackers claimed to have leaked the data. However, before PruittHealth could verify the data, the site where the hackers allegedly posted the data was no longer accessible.

After learning that sensitive consumer data had been accessed by an unauthorized party, PruittHealth reviewed the compromised files to determine what information had been breached and which consumers were affected. Although the breached information varies depending on the individual, it may include your name, social security number, date of birth, government identification information, demographic information, contact information, home address, bank account number, health insurance information, and health information.

On May 30, 2024, PruittHealth sent data breach letters to everyone affected by the recent data security incident. These letters should provide victims with a list of what information about them has been compromised.
