Virginia’s governor announces the state will abandon California’s emissions standards

(JACK AYLMER)

IN THE FUTURE, SOME STATES WILL TELL YOU WHAT KIND OF CARS YOU CAN AND CAN’T BUY.

MORE THIRD OF THE COUNTRY IS FOLLOWING CALIFORNIA’S LEADERSHIP IN THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE TRANSITION.

BUT ONE STATE HAS SECOND THOUGHTS.

VIRGINIA NOW PLANS TO REPEAL THE CALIFORNIA EMISSIONS STANDARDS IT PREVIOUSLY APPROVED IN 20-21.

Governor GLEN YOUNGKIN SAID GOVERNMENT MANDATING WHAT CARS PEOPLE SHOULD BUY IS “FUNDAMENTALLY WRONG.”

(JONGKIN)

The idea that unelected bureaucrats in California should decide for Virginians which car to drive is wrong.

(JACK AYLMER)

THE LAW WOULD HAVE REQUIRED THAT A CERTAIN PERCENTAGE OF NEW VEHICLES SOLD IN THE STATE HAD TO BE ELECTRIC OR HYBRID FROM 20-25.

BY 20-35, ALL VEHICLES SOLD IN VIRGINIA WILL HAVE TO BE ZERO EMISSIONS MODELS.

THESE STANDARDS WERE FIRST ADOPTED BY THE COMMONWEALTH WHILE IT WAS UNDER DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP.

BUT WITH YOUNGKIN NOW IN THE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE, HE IS SETTING VIRGINIA ON A DIFFERENT COURSE.

(JONGKIN)

To be clear, this is not a statement about electric vehicles. And I’m a big supporter of Virginians buying electric vehicles, but I want Virginians to make that decision for themselves.

(JACK AYLMER)

THIS ANNOUNCEMENT HAS BEEN CONDEMNED BY BOTH DEMOCRATS AND ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS.

WITH VIRGINIA’S DEMOCRATIC SENATE MAJORITY LEADER ACCUSING YOUNGKIN OF VIOLATING THE LAW TO ABUSE HIS POWER-

COMPARISON OF THE GOVERNOR WITH VLADIMIR PUTIN ON THE DECISION.

Meanwhile, the Southern Environmental Law Center said the move is “ILLEGAL, SHORT-SIGHTED AND BAD PUBLIC POLICY.”

Arguing that the virgins will now miss out on the health and environmental benefits that the law could have provided.

BUT A MAJORITY OF PEOPLE IN THE STATE AGREE WITH YOUNGKIN ON THIS.

A 20-23 poll found that only 9 percent of Virgos strongly supported adopting California’s standards.

AND 56 percent strongly agreed that Virginia should have its own regulations, independent of what is enforced in California.

THE TRANSITION OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES HAS NOT COME WITHOUT CONTROVERSY. TO LEARN ABOUT MORE STORIES LIKE THIS, DOWNLOAD OUR STRAIGHT ARROW NEWS APP AND SIGN UP FOR ALERTS FROM ME – JACK AYLMER – FOR THE LATEST.
