Spanish restaurant Disfrutar named the best in the world

Foodies have been raving about Spain for a while, but it’s now official: the European hub is home to the world’s best restaurant.

The rankings of the world’s best eateries were announced on Wednesday evening, with Spain’s Disfrutar taking top honors. That restaurant, run by chefs Oriol Castro, Eduard Xatruch and Mateu Casanas, ranked second on the list last year.

The rankings come from members of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants Academy, made up of chefs, food writers and other industry experts. All told, Spain claimed three of the top five places on this year’s list – and six in total.

Barcelona-based Disfrutar has been a regular on the list since 2018, debuting at number 19 and has continued to climb ever since. Due to its victory this year, it is not eligible for inclusion on the list. Gourmet offerings include a caviar-filled Panchino donut and a frozen gazpacho sandwich. The restaurant offers two parallel menus of 30 courses.

“We would like to dedicate this award to gastronomy in our country, and to all the people who have worked and continue to work to build this wonderful profession,” said Xatruch.

Chef Victor Arguinzoniz’s Asador Etxebarri, based in Atxondo, Spain, came in second this year. That restaurant specializes in barbecue dishes. Among American restaurants, New York City’s Atomix topped the list. And Hong Kong’s Wing was the highest-charting debut this year, debuting at number 20.
