Texas Bar Foundation honors Judge Zimmerman with highest honors

Judge Alvin Zimmerman

The Texas Bar Foundation has honored an alum of the University of Houston Law Center with a 2024 Outstanding 50 Year Lawyer Award. Judge Alvin L. Zimmerman (’64, JD ’67) is one of four recipients recognized for adhering to “the highest principles and traditions of the legal profession and service to the public” for more than 50 years.

Judge Zimmerman served as an Assistant Texas Attorney General, Houston Municipal Court Judge, and Judge of the 309th Family of the Harris County District Courts and the first Judge of the 269th Civil Court.

He was chairman of Zimmerman, Axelrad, Stern and Wise for more than 34 years until his firm was acquired by Spencer Fane LLP, where he serves as Of Counsel and continues to practice with both of his sons. He and his wife Susie live in Houston

Judge Zimmerman chaired and continues to serve as a member of the UH Alumni Association, UH Law Alumni Association, HLR Foundation, HLR, Inc. and the UH Foundation. He is a past chairman of the ADR Section of the State Bar of Texas as well as two different sections of the Houston Bar Association: the Family Law and ADR Sections.

He has received several awards, including the Karen Susman ADL Jurisprudence Award, the David Gibson Award for Outstanding Professionalism and Achievement in the Field of Family Law from the Gulf Coast Family Law Specialist, and the Texas Association of Credential Mediators Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of mediations. .

Judge Zimmerman, along with the other winners, will be recognized at the annual Texas Bar Foundation Awards Dinner on June 21 at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas.
