Covich named Big 12 Coach of the Year

Houston’s Santiago de la Fuente (player), Texas’ Nathan Petronzio (newcomer) and West Virginia’s Sean Kovich (Coach) took home individual season honors, while eight different member institutions had selections for the 2024 Men’s Golf All-Big 12 Team.

Texas and Texas Tech each earned two selections to the team, while Baylor, Cincinnati, Houston, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and TCU earned one selection.

Big 12 coaches voted for Coach of the Year, while the Clippd rankings determined the Player and Newcomer of the Year and All-Big 12 Team awards. The Big 12 Championship co-medalists were automatically selected to the team.

De la Fuente claims Houston’s first Big 12 Player of the Year honors after appearing in nine events this season. The senior finished his 2023-2024 campaign ranked No. 20 in the country, the highest ranking of any Big 12 men’s golfer. The native of Guadalajara, Mexico, led the team with a 70.20 stroke average while posting 20 rounds at par or better this season. De la Fuente was named to the 2024 Big 12 All-Tournament Team before helping the Cougars earn a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional.

Petronzio is the second consecutive and the twelfthe Longhorn is named Newcomer of the Year. He joined the team after three seasons at SMU and this year posted seven individual finishes in the top 25 and four in the top 10. The Bee Cave, Texas native earned a selection to the Big 12 All-Tournament Team after competing on the eighth-place finish before earning his best No. 2 finish of the season at the NCAA Austin Regional. Petronzio had a batting average of 71.66 while shooting 19 of 32 rounds at par or better.

Covich earned his first Coach of the Year honors after leading West Virginia to its second NCAA Championship appearance (1947) and its second NCAA Regional appearance after being named head coach when the program was reinstated in 2014. The Mountaineers achieved their best result (fifth place). ) at the Big 12 Championship before securing the program’s second NCAA Regional berth in the past five postseasons. At the NCAA Rancho Santa Fe Regionals, the team finished in third place and the program advanced to its first NCAA championship since the implementation of regionals in 1989. WVU finished the season with a program-best 28e-place finish at the NCAA Championship.
