Reason for Jazz F Lauri Markkanen’s absence from the Olympics revealed

Don’t expect Lauri Markkanen during the qualifiers for this summer’s Olympic Games.

According to Sarah Todd from Desert NewsMarkkanen will not participate in the 2024 Finnish qualifiers due to a shoulder injury that kept him inactive to conclude the Utah Jazz regular season.

Fortunately, the injury won’t sideline Markkanen for an extended period of time, as all signs point to the Jazz forward being ready for the start of next season. However, with a major expansion looming, Utah must be careful with its franchise cornerstone.

When Markkanen expressed his thoughts about missing the action, he expressed clear disappointment at not having a chance to adapt:

“Definitely, this is tough. For me it is an honor to represent Finland and play for the national team. Together with my teammates, we talked all season about how great it would be to advance to the Olympic Games.”

Markkanen is coming off a season in Utah, averaging 23.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists on impressive 48.0/39.9/89.9 splits. Of course it would be nice to see this kind of production on the national stage, but the long-term consequences are too great.

As long as his health remains under control this offseason, the Finnish forward will return to the field next October, ready to lead this team back above .500 for the first time since 2022.
