Californian Digger Lauter makes his first trip to North Dakota a success with victory at the men’s Fargo Marathon – InForum

FARGO – Digger Lauter of Oakland, California had never visited North Dakota before this week.

Lauter’s first trip to state was worth it as he won the men’s race at the 20th Essentia Health Fargo Marathon on Saturday.

Looking for a quick marathon, his eyes turned to Fargo.

“I wanted a fast race, a flat race,” Lauter said. “It’s hard to get those in California and I had never been to North Dakota, so I wanted to go there.”

Lauter clocked a time of 2 hours, 25 minutes and 32 seconds.

As the kilometers ticked away, Lauter started to find his rhythm and just after the half he knew a win was possible.

“I felt a little slow in the first half, but picked it up halfway through and started to hit my stride,” Lauter said. “Around mile 15 or so I noticed I was starting to catch up to the leader, but I wanted to be patient and not try to climb. I knew the last part would be painful.

It was painful, but a supportive Fargo crowd helped Lauter push through to find the win.

“The last ten kilometers were very painful,” said Lauter. “There was a lot of support from the public during the last ten kilometers. That really kept me going.”

West Fargo runner Leo Smith finished the marathon in third place with a time of 2:29:15. Flagstaff, Ruairi Moynihan of Arizona crossed the line in second with a time of 2:28:39.
