Jon Lanford Obituary – MA

former vice president of James River Corp., Fitchburg, MA; Veterinary surgeon; 77 FARMINGTON, Maine – Jon A. Lanford, 77, of Farmington, Maine, died Friday, Nov. 4, at Orchard Park Rehabilitation and Living Center in Farmington.

He was born on September 24, 1934 in San Diego, California, the son of William K. and Mary (Willis) Lanford. The family then moved to Texas, where he attended school in Irving, and Arlington State College, where he was active in ROTC.

In 1954, Jon enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, which took him to New England. He was stationed at Cape Elizabeth, Maine, at the Rock Island Ledge Lighthouse and later at the Coast Guard Cutter, Acushnet.

On October 19, 1957, he married Anita Mercier in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. They settled and raised their family in Westminster, Massachusetts.

After his discharge from the service he went to work for Crocker Burbank Paper Co., in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. He started as a laborer, working on the paper machines and then as a paper tester in the laboratory. In 1965 he started his career as a paper salesman. When James River Corp. purchased the Fitchburg plant and the Otis Mill in Jay, Maine, he became sales manager for both plants. In June 1978, he was named vice president of the James River Corp.. In 1985, he became Mill Manager of the Otis Mill of Jay, Maine. He retired in June 1990.

Jon was an avid golfer and a long-time member of Wilson Lake Country Club. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family and friends. For about ten years, he and Anita were snowbirds in the Myrtle Beach area, where Jon played golf and enjoyed the mild weather.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Anita; his daughter, Cheryl Welch and her husband, Bruce of Farmington; a son, Jon B. and Melissa of Acworth, Ga.; a son, Matthew and his friend, Kristin Sween of Casper, Wyoming; and a daughter, Jennifer Taylor and her husband, Scott of Wilton. Also five grandchildren, Ashley, DJ (Dennis Jon), Madeena, Matthew and Katelyn.

He was predeceased by an infant son, Jeff, his parents, a sister, Linda Hill, and a brother, Tad Lanford.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Farmington with the Rev. Thomas Lequin, celebrant, officiating. Family and friends are invited to call at the Wiles Funeral Home, Cremation Service & Remembrance Center, 137 Farmington Falls Rd., Farmington, on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
